Welcome to the 21st Century Community Learning Centers in the North Adams Public Schools. On October 10, 2006 we began our 6th year of after school programming at three elementary school sites! Nearly 400 North Adams students attend after school programs Monday thru Friday. Our programming consists of academic enrichment programs designed to extend and enhance the learning that takes place in the day program, as well as a variety of programs in art, music, youth leadership and physical education. All of the programs are planned using the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, which are the guidelines for learning, teaching and assessment for the Commonwealth's Public Schools.
After school programs are staffed with certified teachers, program leaders, assistants and volunteers from our local colleges, such as MCLA and Williams College. In addition, the 21st Century Community Learning Centers partner with the YMCA, Northern Berkshire Creative Arts, Reach Foundation & United Way. These valuable partners make it possible to sustain the excellent quality of our after school programming. This year we are also working with the COTY Youth Center, YMCA, and Magic Seasons DayCare to provide seamless after school programming that will better meet the needs of children and their families.
Each year that 21st CCLC has been in existence, the team of site coordinators seeks to "raise the bar" with regard to offering quality programs for our students! This year, the focus of after school is the planning and implementation of thematic science units. NAPS summer science camp has enjoyed such overwhelming success, we have incorporated similar units in our after school programs for fall 2006-2007. These units will integrate activities from all curriculum areas, such as math, language arts and social studies. Programs will be filled with hands on activities, student to student interaction, guided by our motto of "Learning by Doing".
Another focus of our after school program is the creation of Youth Councils at each site. Last year the first Brayton Youth Council was created in which students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades reached out to their school community as well as the community at large with such projects as the United Way Walkathon and a Bowl-a-thon to help a family in need. The goal is to empower our youth to lead the way in their schools as well as community, for it is the students who will be our future leaders.
We will be updating our site in weeks to come with news of many exciting events in after school! Our 1st session will run until February 2, 2007, with our 2nd session of 16 weeks beginning February 12, 2007. As it gets closer to enrollment time, we will update families as to the date, and new brochures will sent home with students.
