Student Advisory Board

Brayton School Student Advisory Board (S.A.B.) developed a program to help people in need in Haiti called “HATS FOR HAITI”. “HATS FOR HAITI”- For one week, beginning January 25, 2010, students were allowed to wear a hat in school by paying $1.00 per day or $4.00 for the week. The money raised will be donated to the people of Haiti.

Connor Meehan, a member of the Student Advisory Board, brought this idea to the S.A.B. after learning about the tragic disaster in Haiti. Advisory Board members embraced his idea and began to develop a plan. The S.A.B. knew they needed more help to make this happen so they brought in the subcommittee members to help.

Plans were made for flyers, posters, and tickets. Members visited classrooms and informed students Pre-Kindergarten through seventh grade about the events in
Haiti and let them know there was a way for them to help. “HATS FOR HAITI.”   Students began selling tickets Thursday, January 21, 2010.  As of January 27th the team was ecstatic to learn that “HATS FOR HAITI” had raised $1,000.00.
Parents, Grandparents, faculty and staff district wide have joined Brayton School in this humanitarian effort. One grandparent made an anonymous donation of $100.00 asking that any student who couldn’t afford to wear a hat be given a ticket.

As plans for the Hats for Haiti program were being made, Mrs. Kovacs' third grade students were busy developing their own fundraiser.  Students from Mrs. Kovacs class decided they wanted to help Haitian Earthquake victims.  They brainstormed ideas and settled on “Change for a Change in Haiti.”   Their idea was that they would ask people to donate their spare change and gather it together to support efforts to assist in Haiti.   They made posters and decorated and distributed containers in classrooms and around the building.  They will be continuing their efforts through the week.

Both of the fundraising efforts have made decisions to donate their funds to Sr. Eunice Tassone to assist in her ongoing efforts to help the Haitian people.

The student advisory board members want to thank their school community for its support and let everyone know…   S.A.B. members are ready for their next challenge!
