Description
Job Goal: To assist School Nurse Supervisor in providing the fullest possible educational opportunity for each student by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in the schools.

Supervision: Reports to Building Principal and School Nurse Supervisor. Supervises Health Aides as designated by Administration.

Performance Responsibilities:

1. Assists School Nurse Supervisor, school health committee, and administrators in developing school health program.
2. Participates in work of health curriculum committee.
3. Conducts school programs of immunization, physical examinations, and sight and hearing testing as directed by the School Nurse Supervisor.
4. Observes students on a regular basis to detect health needs.
5. Instructs teachers on screening students for health defects.
6. Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students.
7. Reports to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other state and federal agencies on student health matters, as directed by the School Nurse Supervisor.
8. Assesses family history and home situations, which may affect a student’s health via home visits when necessary.
9. Assumes authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered an injury or emergency illness.
10. Administers first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures.
11. Makes recommendations to School Nurse Supervisor on health needs of individual students including assessment and evaluation, and the degree of significance of health problems on student educational progress.
12. Implements School Committee policy on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases. Provides programs for the prevention and control of disease. Screens all new students to ensure compliance with immunization laws, and makes recommendations for exclusion of student for lack of compliance to school administration.
13. Participates in in-service training programs.
14. Assists school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in schools.
15. Provides health counseling and education with students and school personnel. Such activities include in-service programs, individual and group counseling, classroom presentations of current health issues, and promotion of health prevention program activities.
16. Maintains certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.
17. Provides direction and assistance to substitute school nurses.
18. Performs technical nursing services as prescribed by a physician and necessary to maintain medically fragile children in the school setting.
19. Demonstrates knowledge of, and ability to administer medications appropriately, in keeping with school policy/protocol on administration of medication in the school.
20. Participates in team evaluations and conferences on all children with medical problems.
21. Completes accident reports, and maintains a log of health room activity.
22. Administers prescribed student medication.
23. Any other related duties as may be assigned by Administration.

Special Knowledge/Abilities For Position: The position requires the applicant to be fluent in Microsoft Word. The applicant must possess basic computer skills, as well as, strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

Requirements
Required: Current Massachusetts licensure as a Registered Nurse (R.N.).
Current Massachusetts certification as a school nurse. B.S. in Nursing from an accredited nursing program.
Current C.P.R. certification.

Physical Requirements: The position requires a moderate amount of walking, standing, sitting and climbing stairs and step stool whenever necessary. Activities also include moderate physical exertion in body movement such as reaching, bending, twisting, grasping, pushing, and pulling of objects. The position requires lifting objects of 20 pounds on a frequent basis, and over 40 pounds occasionally. There is a frequent requirement of fine manipulation associated with the required use of a computer, typewriter, keyboard, calculator, and other business machines. The use of medical equipment is also required.

Environmental Conditions: The occupant is required to work indoors. The regular chemical solvents are toners, inks, and cleaning fluids. The occupant may come into contact with medical and/or bodily fluids.
