Once Upon-1
logo-lit festival

During the week of February 27th, the North Adams Public Schools held its first annual Sally Goodrich Children’s Literature Festival. The Festival was a time for the whole community to come together to experience the magic and joy of children’s literature. Named after the North Adams Public Schools former Title 1 Director, the Festival hosted community and school based activities throughout the week.

On Tuesday, February 28th, a Once Upon a Time Family Night was held at Brayton. The evening was filled with fun activities focused on the art in children’s books and children’s book trivia. The evening also included the debut of Book Share bookshelves located at each elementary school. The bookshelves will be an area for ongoing collection of new and gently used children’s books to be used for lending or giving activities throughout the school year.

The Festival coincided with the National Education Association’s Read Across

America week, a reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2nd, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss.

The festival logo was created

by Drury student, Alex Tower.

Another event was a community wide StoryWalk™, featuring the book, Annie and the Wild Animals, written and illustrated by Jan Brett. The StoryWalk™ began on Saturday, February 25 and ran through Saturday, March 3rd. Throughout that week, children and their families could read a story by following the pages displayed in storefront windows on Main Street in North Adams.  The first page of the story began at Box Car Media and the last page was displayed at the North Adams Public Library. The Festival StoryWalk™ was a collaboration with the Family Resource Center of Child Care of the Berkshires.
